Jackunzel Week: Day 6

The first time his arms encircled her shoulders with such intensity, she’d been startled, to say the least. Jack usually didn’t touch her a lot (something, she realized, he was still getting used to doing), so when she had been standing in front of her easel looking over a painting and felt him wrap his arms around her from behind, she couldn’t stop herself from jumping a bit.

At first she started to smile, thinking he was actually putting aside his discomfort to show her a loving gesture, but it didn’t take an instant to realize something was wrong. There was something terribly unsettling about the way he grasped her. It was too rough. Too…desperate. Much tighter than it should’ve been. His hands clutched the sleeves of his hoodie, turning his knuckles bone white. He laid his head on her shoulder and she could feel the soft wisps of his silvery hair tickling her cheek. But the thing that disturbed her the most was the fact that his arms were shaking. The tremor was slight, hardly there at all, but she noticed.

“Jack?” she ventured, trying to keep the panic from her voice. “Are you all right?”

She felt him take a shuddering breath and bury his face in her hair. “Yeah, I just…I just wanted to make sure you were here.”

Her brow wrinkled in confusion. “What do you mean? Of course I’m here.”

“I know, but…I needed to make sure that I could still…still touch you.”

Rapunzel blinked, trying to understand. Jack had never done anything like this before. Sure, he got sad sometimes, but he was never this…this serious. He seemed scared.

Which, in turn, was making her scared. “Is everything o—”

“Just tell me…tell me you won’t leave. Say you won’t stop believing in me.”

“Jack, you know I would never—”

His arms tightened around her shoulders. “Just say it. Please. I—I need to hear you say it.”

That was when she suddenly understood what this was about. Her heart melted in sympathy. She lifted her hands to rest on his arms. “I won’t, Jack. I’ll never stop believing. You won’t ever be invisible again. Not to me.” Then, on an impulse, she turned around so she was facing him and wrapped her arms around his back, pressing her cheek against his frosted chest. “I’ll always be here. Always. I promise. You don’t have to worry.”

His chest deflated as he exhaled heavily, his grip loosening a bit. A cold hand stroked her hair, but he remained silent.

Rapunzel rubbed gentle circles on his back, ignoring the chill from the fabric and focusing on comforting the spirit. “I’ll never leave you, Jack. I love you too much for that.”

Rapunzel makes Jack feel safe.

DAY 4 of Jackunzel Week: Vestige
A trace of something that is disappearing or no longer exists.

What if Rapunzel did use her powers to prolong her life, to continue healing others over time? Say she met a boy named Jackson Overland. Say she fell in love, and chose to grow up with him.

And then one day, her hair gets cut, and she loses her powers. And on that same day: Jackson Overland had fallen into a lake, and was chosen by the Man in the Moon to become Jack Frost. And so he became immortal.

But she no longer was. She was mortal now. She would grow up, and grow old; just as Jack was once supposed to. So, in the end, they never really got to meet halfway.
